Where Would We Be Without HDMI Cables?!

We are all lucky enough in this day and age to have a multitude of electronic entertainment equipment in our homes. With prices dropping exponentially we now have HDTVs, DVDs, PlayStations, Digital Radios, and Satellite TV among others. The home theatre has been born and it is due to clever little inventions that we have this privilege. Before the HDMI cable we used to rely on the following connectors:

TigerDirect

Component video cables- known to you and I as RCA connectors – these connectors carry video signals into two channels for colour and a third for luminance. Another connector is the S-video cable which transmits analogue signals using one cable and a four pin connector. Another is the DVI cable which is a 29 pin connection used for computer monitors which can also carry digital signals.

Many people who had HDTVs in the early stages relied on DVI for obvious reasons in that it hit the market first. Not to go into too much depth but the Digital Visual Interface (DVI) cable is a low cost, high-bandwidth digital connector which was originally used to connect PCs and digital monitors. It is now the most widely used connection in the computer industry. They can also be used for your home theatre system as you can use the DVI cable for connecting projectors, monitors and advanced DVD players.

However HDMI has made things a lot easier for us all. You can use these when you want to hook up a HDMI system with that of a DVI. HDMI cables carry video, audio, and intercomponent operability commands (which are remote signals). When you connect up a HDMI with a HDMI cable (in particular the new HDMI 1.3) you get all the video performance that DVI has to offer up to and including 1080p.

Further to this HDMI offer even more advantages as you can deliver digital HD video, multi-channel audio, and control signals between various HDMI and DVI components. SO HDMI offers a brilliant solution of combining many functions in one cable rather than having that annoying spaghetti of cables that you would normally expect (and hate) for you home theatre.

HDMI 1.3 also offers high data speed and supports a new special format known as Deep Colour which can support 1.8 times as many colours as RGB. HDMI 1.3 also offers improved audio syncing so you have no more annoying lip sync problems. On top of this, the HDMI 1.3 supports the output of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-FD Master Audio streams and can be used with can be used with a number of products, including the latest DVD players and the Playstation 3
So this is just a basic run down of what HDMI cables have to offer. They really do make having a home theatre that bit more manageable and also allows you to get the best out of it!

How a speaker cable affects sound quality

If you’re outfitting your home theater, then most likely, you’ve spent a great deal of care selecting the speakers to go with it. You want your surround sound to be just as crisp and clear as the image on your new hi def television set, so you’ve gone out of your way to get the best quality speakers and arrange them perfectly to get the full surround sound experience.

Deal Of The Day

So now you’re shopping for speaker cables, and you want to make sure you’re getting the good cables so as not to render that investment on the speakers moot. After all, you don’t spend a thousand bucks setting up your surround sound system only to use the cheapest speaker cables available right?

Wrong.

Trust us, get the one dollar speaker cables.

When you go into an electronics store to get your speaker cables, you always bump into a pushy sales clerk who insists that with a gold plated, oxygen free, fifty dollar speaker cable, you’re going to get fifty times better sound than you would out of the one dollar cable.

The only thing you’re going to get out of the fifty dollar cable is an empty wallet. If you’re outfitting a full surround system, you might wind up spending well over another thousand bucks trying to go all out on the fancy cables, where you could’ve had the same setup for ten bucks if you’d gotten the cheaper cables. But don’t worry, when you have it all installed, you’ll find out where that extra thousand bucks went: Into the store’s cash register, because it sure didn’t go into improving your sound quality.

A CD or an MP3 is really nothing but a bunch of computer data. It’s just digital information, really. Now of course, if you’re playing a vinyl-record, that’s a different story. Likewise if you’re running over one hundred meters of wire, or have done some scientific tests in your listening area and discovered this or that cable to be far superior to any other. Otherwise, don’t waste a bunch of time worrying about the quality of a speaker wire.

Setting up the full “entertainment zone” in your living room can be a lot of fun, and you do want it to be as good as it can be, or why bother spending so much? So, when it comes to speakers, go ahead and splurge on a top brand. When it comes to your HDTV, get the biggest, most hi-def TV you can safely afford. When it comes to the cables… go scrounge some change from your couch cushions and get the cheapest stuff available, because it’s going to do exactly what the fifty dollar cable will do, minus, of course, making you fifty dollars poorer.

And of course, if you’re that eager to be parted from your hard earned money, you can always buy the one dollar cable and drop forty nine in the charity bucket on the way out. Hey, if you insist on spending an extra forty nine dollars for no good reason, it may as well be for a good cause, because no matter what anyone tells you, the one dollar cables will give you the exact same sound as the fifty dollar speaker cables.

Cables like High-Definition Multimedia Interface permits the video signal to remain in digital form all the way to the screen, so you avoid the slight picture dilapidation that can come with translating the signal from digital to analog, and back. These cables can carry standard-definition and high-definition digital video signals, as well as 2 to 8 discrete channels of digital audio, depending on the capabilities of the source component. Most HDTV tuners, HD-ready TVs, DVD players, and Blue-ray Disc players now come with at least one HDMI terminal. HDMI cables are also backwards-compatible with the older digital video connection.

Video Interface, How Much Do You Know?

There are many kinds of video interface in common life, from the RF to VGA then HDMI, some can only transmit analog signals, some can transmit digital signals, some transmit video and audio signal in one line, and some transmit video and audio signals separately. The following is some introduction about it.

1, RF
The antenna and analog closed-circuit connect TV is used radio frequency (RF) interface. As the most common video connection, which can simultaneously transmit analog video and audio signals. RF interface transmit the mixed-encoded signals of video and audio, the circuit on display device output picture by a series of mixed-signal separation coding, decoding. Due to the need for video, audio, hybrid coding, the signal will be interfere with each other, so it’s quality output quality is the worst of all interfaces. Cable and satellite TV receiving equipment is also commonly used RF connections, but in this case, they transmit the digital signal.

2, composite video
Unlike the RF interface which contain the audio signal, composite video (Composite) usually use yellow RCA (Lotus socket) connectors. “Composite” means analog signals that transmit the brightness and color signal in same channels , but  if a TV can not separate these two signals, there will be a shadow.

3, S-Video
S-Video connection using Y / C (luminance / chrominance) separation-output, use the four-wire transmit the signal, the interface is the four-pin interface. two-pin grounded, the other two needles were transmitted light degree and chrominance signals respective. Because the transmission luminance and chrominance signals respectively, S-Video results better than composite video. However, S-Video anti-jamming capability is weak, so the length of S-Video cable is better not to over 7 meters.

4, Chromatism
Chromatism (Chromatism) are usually labeled as Y/Pb/Pr,  use red, green, blue three colors to mark each cable and interfaces. Green cable (Y) transmit luminance signal. Blue and red cables (Pb , And Pr) is the color difference signal transmission. The effect of chromatism is better than S-Video, so a lot of DVD and high-definition playback devices are used the interface. If you use high-quality wire and interfaces, even if A 10-meter-long cable, component cable can transmit good picture also.

5, VGA
VGA (Video Graphics Array) has another name known as D-Sub. A VGA interface has total pins of 15, which is divided into three rows, each row of five holes, is the most widely used interface types on the graphics card, the vast majority of

Graphics card comes with such an interface. It can transmit red, green, and blue analog signals as well as the sync signals (horizontal and vertical signals). Using the VGA connect device, cable length is best not exceeding 10 meters, but also to
Note that connector is installed firmly or not, otherwise may cause the image appears a shadow.

6, DVI
DVI (Digital Visual Interface) port and VGA are the most common computer interface, and the difference from VGA is that, DVI can transmit digital signals, without carrying out several analog converter, so picture quality is very high. At present, many high-definition television also provides a DVI interface. Note that, DVI interface has a variety of specifications often, DVI-D (Digital) and DVI-I (Intergrated). DVI-D can only transmit digital signals, we can use it to connect video cards and flat-panel TVs. DVI-I can interchange in the DVI-D and VGA.

7, HDMI
HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) interface is a recent development interface, it is  transmit all-digital signal the same as the DVI. The difference is that HDMI interface can not only transfer High-definition digital video signals, but also can simultaneously transmit high-quality audio signals. Has the same function with the radio interface at the same time, but thanks to all-digital signal transmission, unlike radio frequency interface that poor quality of picture occurs.

8, DisplayPort
DisplayPort is a display interface released by Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). As a successor to DVI interface, DisplayPort will add high-definition audio signals transfer support at the same time in transmitting video signals, while support higher resolution and refresh rate.

According to the design, DisplayPort supports both external display connections, and the built-in display connectivity. VESA want notebook manufacturers not only use DisplayPort to connect independent monitors but also use it directly connected LCD screen and motherboard for easy upgrades on notebook. To this end, DisplayPort interface is also designed to be very small, both to facilitate the use of laptops, but also allows the video card to configure multiple port.

9, IEEE 1394
IEEE 1394, also known as FireWire or iLink, it can transmit digital video and audio and machine control signals with high bandwidth, and very stable. Usually it is mainly used to connect digital video cameras, DVD recorders and other devices. There are two types IEEE 1394 interface: the 6-pin hexagonal interface and a small  4-pin square interface. Hexagonal 6-pin interface can provide power supply to device connected, while the 4-pin Of the square interface can not.

10, BNC
BNC (coaxial cable card ring interface) interface is mainly used to connect high-end home theater products, and professional video equipment. BNC cable has five connectors, for receiving red, green, blue, horizontal synchronization and the vertical sync signal. BNC connector allows the video signal to reduce interference between each other can achieve the best signal response effect. In addition, BNC interface connect very tight due to specially designed, do not worry poor contact arising from interface loosening.
