Plasma is the type of television most associated with high end home electronics.  All plasma televisions come in a flat panel variety. Most are sized in the 40-49? range. They are competitively priced against LCD flat panel televisions, and feature a stunning picture that puts you in the middle of the action. Plasmas weigh more than LCD’s, but nothing additional supports couldn’t handle. They are susceptible to burn-in, but despite rumors to the contrary, the gases that power the picture can not be refilled. While they are too young to accurately measure, plasma televisions should last anywhere from 10-20 years.

Keep in mind that true HDTV resolution can’t be found in plasma TVs smaller than 50 inches. There are two HDTV broadcast standards – 1920×1080 interlaced (1080i), and 1280×720 progressive (720p). So, in order for a plasma TV to be considered truly ‘HD’, it should have at least the same amount of pixels as a 720p signal, or more.

‘HD’ in smaller sizes of plasma means that there are more pixels than ‘ED’ plasma, but generally not as many as there are in a true HD display. So, you’ll find that it’s difficult to see any substantial difference in picture quality between these two types of plasma TVs, particularly when viewing an HDTV program.

When viewing a widescreen DVD, you may often be surprised to see that the less expensive EDTV plasma TV actually looks sharper than the more expensive HDTV plasma TV! That’s because the image resolution of a widescreen DVD (nominally 704×480) is very close to the actual pixel count (852×480) in an EDTV plasma. However, new blue ray DVD’s are made for 1080 resolution.

The bottom line? Think about where you’ll put your plasma TV, how far you’ll be sitting from it, and what you’ll be watching on it most of the time. If you’ll be sitting eight feet or more from a 37-inch or 42-inch plasma TV, you’ll probably be quite happy with an EDTV version.

Now to address a few concerns about plasma: First of all, today’s plasma TVs don’t have the same problems with premature image aging (burn-in, burn-out) that plagued older plasma monitors and TVs. That’s because the mix of gases used in the panels have been changed to improve longevity. You’ll hear the figure ‘60,000 hours’ thrown around; be conservative and figure half that, which is 30,000 hours. 30,000 hours is the equivalent of watching eight hours a day of television, seven days a week for 10 years.

How To Buy A Plasma Tv?

To buy a plasma TV you have to first determine what you need. You should consider some important aspects pertaining to plasma TVs before purchasing one. Do not choose a plasma TV based on the brand alone. Each brand of Plasma TV’s has its own strengths and weaknesses.

Listed below are some useful tips on plasma TVs that can clear up some of the confusion that might arise after looking at a number of brands and varieties.

Glare
Choose a plasma TV only if you are going to place it in a dark room. Plasma TVs have a shiny surface. If you place them in a room that is bright your TV viewing experience will not be as good as it could be. The glare from the surroundings may be reflected while you are watching TV.

Resolution
You should decide on the lines of resolution. Choose between 720 or 1080 vertical lines of resolution. If you receive HD TV signals or if you have a Blu-ray player at home, consider 1080p. The newer varieties of plasma TVs offer contrast ratios as high as 30,000:1. A higher rate of contrast will display true blacks in the picture you see on screen. Low contrast ratios will not.

Refresh Rate
If you have a home cinema, it is suggested that you select a plasma screen TV over an LCD television. LCD TVs have a refresh rate of 60 hertz or 120 hertz. In contrast, plasma TVs have a refresh rate of 480 hertz. A higher refresh rate will result in reduced blurring in high intensity scenes with fog, waves or smoke.

Distance
Determine the right viewing distance and choose the size of your plasma TV screen accordingly. If your viewing distance is 6 to 10 feet, you should buy a TV screen that is 32 to 37 inches in size. At a distance of 10 to 14 feet, choose a plasma TV that is 42 to 46 inches in size. Plasma TVs that are 50 inches and larger are recommended for a distance of 12 to 15 feet from the screen to the viewer. For a screen size that exceeds 60 inches you need to be more than 15 feet away from the screen.

Audio
You have to consider your audio options carefully. You can choose quality speakers that are incorporated into the TV itself or buy them separately. Some manufacturers offer optional audio features that can be attached to the sides. Alternatively, other options could include bookshelf or satellite speakers. For this you will have to buy an amplifier or receiver setup as well.

Choice
Choose the features of your plasma TV based on those you are likely to use. Consumer sets will have a higher number of features, aesthetic looking bodies and promising warranties. Commercial sets provide better picture quality but may lack features.

So, before you commit to a TV purchase, consider glare, resolution, contrast ratio, refresh rate, audio options and the distance you will be sitting from the screen. Do not ignore these important aspects when choosing plasma TVs.

Panasonic VIERA TC-P50GT25 50-inch 1080p 3D Plasma HDTV Review

I made a mistake and purchased a 50 inch Samsung 3D plasma and returned it within a week due to horrible image retention. After learning a lesson on the importance of doing research on a purchase this large I went to work on trying to find the best tv in my price range (1800 bucks at most.) With most individual reviews and head to head reviews I read I kept seeing Panasonic 3d plasmas at the top of the list. These tv’s were not only voted best for 3d but also for 2d. So I went ahead and pulled the trigger on this set and I’m extremely glad I did. There are four main things I want a tv to be able to do; watch sports, play video games, watch regular programs and also to watch movies. And this set performs incredibly well in all areas.

I watch a lot of football and UFC and so far both of these sports look amazing on this tv. Everything runs smoothly and there is no issues with motion blur. So it’s great for sports.

I own an XBOX 360 and love first person shooters (Call of Duty, Halo, etc..) and so far I have only played COD: Black Ops on this tv but it’s a lot of fun to play on this set. The game always looks smooth and the colors really pop. Once I got use to the size of the tv (I was playing on a 37 inch before) I fell in love with gaming all over again.

As far as watching regular tv, well, I can say that I wish I had HD tv but unfortunately I don’t. The standard definition looks great on this tv though. My Direct TV receiver isn’t working properly at the moment and I can only view a few programs but so far so good with SD.

Watching movies is where this tv blows other sets out of the water. So far I have watched two regular Blu Rays (The Expendables and Rambo) and one 3d Blu Ray (How to Train Your Dragon) and all I can really say is WOW. I saw both The Expendables and Rambo in the theatre and honestly I think the picture is better on this set than it is at the movies. The colors and amount of detail are incredible. I watched Rambo on the Samsung while I had it and while it did look good it wasn’t as good as with this Panasonic. As far as 3d goes I won’t say it’s as good as IMAX but it is as good as true 3d in a movie theatre. I saw Dragon in 3d at the movies as well and I actually enjoyed it more on this tv. Side note on 3d; I don’t know if it will take off and if it doesn’t that’s okay. I bought this tv because it had the best reviews for 2d so the 3d was a bonus. But it’s a fun bonus.

I’ve also watched some tv on a Samsung LED and I can say with confidence that this Panasonic has a better viewing experience.

Now that I have this tv all I need is a better sound system and some theatre seating and I’ll be set. For the money you won’t find a better set. Why spend more for an LED when this tv is better and costs less? If you’re debating on a great tv to get in this price range then I’d say go for this set. I’m glad I did!
